Label Text Among the Abstract Expressionists, Krasner was uniquely innovative in her use of collage. Though an extremely talented painter in her own right, her work was often overshadowed by that of her husband, Jackson Pollock. To create Black and White, Krasner tore scraps of paper that Pollock had painted, arranged them on a backing, and added her own strokes of black paint. The repurposed and new portions of the work are unified; it is not possible to tell which marks are Pollock’s and which are Krasner’s. By tearing rather than cutting the paper, Krasner imbued the work with roughness and force. The diagonal lines of the collage add energy and a sense of movement.
