New York City is a highly representative piece from Friedlander's series of work often called "the Street." Critics of his work see his use of "the street" as a metaphor for the American social landscape. In this image, windows and doors, reflections, and people--often fragmented--all merge to create new narratives and stories. Space and depth are nebulous.
