The House Committee on Un-American Activities voted unanimously to conduct a full-scale investigation of the Klu Klux Klan. Chairman Edwin D. Light Up Time: Representative Adam Clayton Powell, D-NY, lights up a cigar today just before announcing the names of members of a House subcommittee to probe what he called "hand me down" school systems of de facto segregation in the north. The hearings, he said, probably will start in Washington and be held later in New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Detroit, Cleveland, St. Louis, Los Angeles and San Francisco. A man who identified himself as Josef Mlot-Mroz, of Salem, Massachusetts, chained himself to the fence at the White House January 31 during a double demonstration outside the Executive Mansion. The incident happened as a group of clergymen were picketing to protest "the immorality of the warfare in Vietnam," and a counter demonstration was being held by a group supporting the United States policies. Mlot-Mroz taunted the anti-war demonstrates from his position in chains. Police cut him loose and drove him away in a patrol wagon, January 31, 1967
