Label TextThis suite features stories of Biblical “villainesses,” or women who act
in ways seen as rebellious, violent, or sexually depraved in the
Judeo-Christian gospels. Each is portrayed by the artist in his drag persona of
“Miss Chief Eagle Testickle,” and empowers the women rather than judging them.
Monkman sets every scene in 19th-century Canada, during colonial
expansion across North America, which introduces themes of exploitation and
revenge between Indigenous populations and settlers. These works were created
to look historic book pages rather than contemporary art.
