Label Text The Petersburg press has given two important lithographs by Francesco Clemente, a leading figure internationally in late 20th-century art. Clemente created Untitled B in connection with the publication of the Petersburg Press edition of “The Departure of the Argonaut,” 1986. In this long-format lithograph, the artist uses the serpent, a signature image in his personal iconography, to refer to Alberto Savinio’s La partenza del Argonauta, as first published in “Hermaphrodite,” 1918, as well as to creation myths from Hindu iconography. The scales of the serpent transform into the waves of the sea; the coiled serpent is reminiscent of sailor’s rope. Each print is like a journey scroll. Source: News, Jul Aug Sep 2015
