Daniel Joseph
Martinez’s series of performance-based photographs entitled, A Story for
Tomorrow in 4 Chapters, Dostoevsky Loved the Hunchback of Notre Dame, Muhammad
Ali and Dandelions, Lick My Hunch!, 2010–2012, inscribes a jewish prayer, “Hear
Israel, God is One,” in Latin, Hebrew, and arabic onto his body as a way of
speaking about contemporary spirituality in a world scarred by war, torture,
and genocide in the name of God. The fundamental inspiration for his piece is
the original film, “The Hunchback of Notre Dame,” in which the central
character, a tragic figure, uses the church as a site for political asylum.
Ultimately Martinez leaves us to ponder if a god truly exists, will we ever be
forgiven for what we have done to each other. Source: News, Jan Feb Mar 2017.
