Heizer, since 1967, has been one of the leading practitioners of Earthworks, along with Dennis Oppenheim and Robert Smithson. Just as earthworks undergo transformation due to erosion, seasonal changes, and the passage of time, on a much smaller scale and in a much different way the sandwich in this drawing has undergone changes from the original state depicted between the other two images.
Heizer was born in Berkeley, California in 1944 and studied at the San Francisco Art Institute. The fact that his father was an anthropologist who took his young son along on archaeological expeditions may help explain Heizer's later interests in earthworks.
