Blue Release is representative of Wilmarth's work in many respects and reveals some of the seeming contadictions of working with glass and steel, materials associated with 20th century architecture and minimalist sculpture. The glass has been etched with acid and a "brushy" translucent effect is the result and the steel has not been smoothed to a polish but instead retains the markings of the artist's work.

Wilmarth was born in 1943 in Sonoma, California. He received his formal art education at Cooper Union in New York during the early 1960's and worked as a studio assistant to the sculptor/achitect Tony Smith. In 1969 he was appointed Professor of Sculpture at Cooper Union, and also had a one-year appointment as Visiting Artist at Yale University in 1971-1972.
