Born in New York in 1938, Mangold studied at Cooper Union and Yale University Art School. Two 36-Inch Rules is an excellent example of her early work. With masterful handling of the medium, this painting creates an implied environment and clearly defines an interior space. Even the physical dimensions of the painting are enhanced by the scale of the floorboards, wall and yardstick.
