Label TextOne of the premier intellectuals of our time, Adrian Piper is both an artist and a philosopher. In her art, she aggressively takes a feminist and an African-American point of view. Often participatory and performance based, her art interrogrates the viewer and attempts to aftect change in social behavior. This card, and others like it, was the focal point of an ongoing performance piece in the late 1980s. When confronted with a racially charged situation, Piper would hand out cards reading, "I am black. I am sure you did not realize this when you..." to draw attention to the participants' attitudes toward race. Source: DMAC NEWS January February 2001
