Label TextFred Eversley is affiliated with the Los Angeles-based Light and Space movement that first emerged in 1960s Southern California at the height of the space race, when the Los Angeles metropolitan area and its environs experienced an economic boom and massive expansion by aerospace and engineering companies clustered in the region. Eversley adopted the use of plastic resin, a material originally developed for industrial use. Untitled (parabolic lens) is a translucent curved form crafted from multiple colors of liquid polyester resin spun in a mold on an industrial turntable. As the resin spun, centrifugal force pushed the liquid towards the edges of the mold, creating a lens shape where the center of the sculpture is mere inches thick and nearly transparent. The colored dye diffused throughout the liquid resin until the plastic cured completely. The swirl of orange resin frozen in the center of Untitled exemplifies this unique casting process. Eversley was fascinated with the parabola as a form for concentrating energy: “[I]t’s the only shape in the world that focuses all forms of energy—light, electromagnetic, soundwaves, etc.—to a single focal point.”
