Label TextThis image was taken as the artist, his wife, and two assistants were driving home after a working trip to Arizona. On seeing the grove of bright gold Aspens, the artist stopped his car, stating “I immediately knew there were wonderful images to be made in the area.” Adams initially considered capturing the golden trees in color, but eventually chose his usual black and white. The stillness of the weather allowed for a long exposure, capturing high contrasts between the shimmering leaves and dark forest floor. The scene is shadowy and austere, appearing almost like night though taken in the day. Of the images taken of this grove, Adams stated, “I do not consider them ‘pretty’ scenes, for they are cool and aloof and rather stately.
