Xaviera Simmons' body of work spans photography, performance, video, sound, sculpture, and installation. Across this array of media, she examines the way that language, landscape, and portraiture construct identity. In her photographs, Simmons often repeats or layers found images as a way to interrograte how we interact with pictures and how the context of viewing those pictures shapes our understanding of images. In her print, Untitled (Yellow #2), a figure holds up a grid of twelve repeating images in front of her face like a tourist holding a map. The repeated image is blurred (although it appears to be an embracing couple), adding to the ambiguity of the image.
