Diebenkorn had a lifelong interest in heraldic imagery, and clubs and spades became the main subject matter of his drawings and paintings in the early 1980s. In Green Tree Spade,1982, Diebenkorn has transformed the spade into a tree-like figure and enlarged it so it nearly covers the entire picture plane.
