Label Text This work is from August Sander's open-ended and ultimately incomplete photography project titled People of the Twentieth Century. His goal was to photograph a cross-section of German society and he divided the series into seven sections: The Farmer, The Skilled Tradesman, Woman, Classes and Professions, The Artists, The City, and The Last People (including the homeless and other disen-franchised people). This painting from the series "Woman," is the image of a secretary--who worked in a radio station--with her bobbed hair and a slouched, androgynous pose, is an example of the way urban, emancipated women dressed and presented themselves in 1920s Germany. Among the first works by the artist to enter the collections. NEWS, Oct|Nov|Dec 2019.
