This work is from August Sander's open-ended and ultimately incomplete photography project titled People of the Twentieth Century. His goal was to photograph a cross-section of German society and he divided the series into seven sections: The Farmer, The Skilled Tradesman, Woman, Classes and Professions, The Artists, The City, and The Last People (including the homeless and other disen-franchised people). This painting from the series "Woman," is the image of a secretary--who worked in a radio station--with her bobbed hair and a slouched, androgynous pose, is an example of the way urban, emancipated women dressed and presented themselves in 1920s Germany. Among the first works by the artist to enter the collections.
