Neo Rauch was born, studied, and still lives in Leipzig, Germany. He is considered the principal artist of the New Leipzig School of Painting, which focuses on figuration and the technical skille of the traditional academy.

Rauch has exhibited extensively around the world and is widely collected by major museums. This particular painting exemplifies Rauch's figurative and narrative imagery derived from his dreams and subconscious. The German title, Zahler, translates as "counter" or "payer." The meaning of the image is completly unknow, perhaps even to the artist.
