Label TextThese works (Beaver Sings the Blues and Turtle Mountain) come from Slick’s “Aria for a Coyote Opera” series, inspired
by the experimental operas of artist Robert Wilson and composer Philip Glass.
Each image uses the same setting and characters playing out an abstract
narrative across a simple minimal background. The coyote, a trickster figure in
some Indigenous cultures, acts as a sort of main character and is surrounded by
animals and plants who work together not only as spiritual and artistic symbols
but also form the natural ecological system of the Midwest.
