During the late 1940s, Sewell "Si" Sillman was a pupil of Bauhaus artist Josef Albers at Black Mountain College, North Carolina, and later followed Albers to Yale University. Sillman's paintings on Masonite reflect the teachings of Albers in their composition, while his watercolor drawings demonstate mastery in the application of line and color. This is among the first works by the artist to enter the collection.
