Purchased with funds from the Keith Shaver Bequest, the Art Center has acquired three sculptures by Brooklyn-based artist Sheila Pepe that were recently included in the exhibition Queer Abstraction. Glitter Dome (for Carrie), Oversewn Object with Different Things Underneath, and Votive Modern are from the artist's "Votive Moderns" series and are composed from readymade components, casted plaster objects, textiles, and other forms of media that give them an awkward appearance. The sculptures' forms -- as well as their titles -- subvert the seriousness of traditional abstract sculpture from the 20th century. These sculptures are the first works by Pepe to enter the permanent collections.
