Henri Cartier-Bresson was one of the first photographers to use the Leica, a revolutionary small 35mm camera, which had a very fast lens and used fast film. In 1932, the same year he bought his first Leica, he had his first exhibition at the New York gallery of Julian Levy. In 1935 he studied filmmaking with Paul Strand and the following year he worked as an assistant director to fimmaker Jean Renoir. After spending three years as a POW in World War II, he escaped to France where he organized underground photography units to document the German occupation and withdrawal.
