Born in Cape Town, South Africa, Marlene Dumas is one of the most significant artists working today. Her work is most often figurative, focusing on issues of gender, politics, and identity. As this signature work exemplifies, Dumas' images can be somewhat confrontational  and jarring, but they are always compelling. Dumas has exhibited worldwide.
