Label Text The Art Center recently acquired Glenn Brown’s painting, Swing Time, 2016, through the Coffin Fine Arts Trust. This work is a signature example of the artist’s working process. Brown’s art is steeped in Western pictorial traditions, such as portraiture exemplified here. The reproductions of paintings or drawings in art history books, magazines, and the Internet are the origins of Brown’s imagery. Using swirling and flowing lines in this Indian ink and acrylic on panel, Brown simultaneously references two historical portraits. Like Janus in Roman mythology, one face looks forward and the second gazes back. This work marks a new and important direction in Brown’s art in which the expressive quality of the drawn line is essential. Brown’s art is highly collected around the world, and he has exhibited extensively in Europe. Swing Time was the signature image for his first one-person museum show in the United States at the Art Center in 2016. Source: Apr May Jun 2017 News
