Ton pied mon pied is an exemplary example of what Hazoume refers to as his "jerrican masks," sculptures that follow in the West African and Yoruba mask traditions. He creates these pieces from discarded plastic canisters that were often used to smuggle gasoline from Nigeria into Benin, his home country. Hazoume used the forms inherent in this found material to mimic facial features to which he added black fiber to a configuration reminiscent of historical and contemporary hairstyles. In Ton pied mon pied, the artist quotes historical sources, extracts from current social and economic realities, and supplements these with humor to respond to his life experiences.
