Iago’s Mirror. The black glass felt both classy and fragile, allowing reflection physically and metaphorically. Details of the glass and around the boarder show sophistication and focus on life. I see myself connected to generations before me and because of me, generations to come. This was dependent on my starting viewpoint. The largest to smallest represents my great grandma Claudia, from whom I’m named. Big generational curses, filtering down from a heavy load being broken, and getting smaller. Starting at the smallest mirror and spanning up and out, I see me, my children, and their families to come, achieving more, becoming greater, and bigger. Growth has been carried throughout all the generational mirrors displayed through the flowers and leaves. No matter which way life has taken this family, echoes and ripples of love breaking barriers of time and space but always connected.
DES MOINES SPEAKS
DSM Speaks are short audio reflections on artwork in our permanent collection, written and voiced by diverse members of our community. Contributors to this program were selected in partnership with CultureALL and the Des Moines Art Center. We hope by elevating these diverse ways of seeing we can encourage all visitors to connect more deeply and to see themselves and their identities within our walls.
