Untitled (Sudden Glare of the Sun) is a hybrid of a sculpture and a photograph. The large color image of a sculptural and photographic assemblage rests on the floor leaning against the wall. Hewitt's conceptually-based projects investigate the powerful ways that images create meaning over time and place, both through the identity of the photographer and the subject depicted. her work successfully merges the memories of her own personal experiences with broader, collective memories of historial events. These often revolve around the Black experience in America. Her objects, or frames-within-frames, are fitting metaphors for our layered views of the world.

Hewitt studied at the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, the Yale University School of Art, and New York University, where she was a Clark Fellow in the Africana and Visual Studies programs. She has held residencies at the Studio Museum in Harlem and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and was also a fellow at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University.
