Label Text Jacques Villon was one of the early 20th century's most gifted printmakers, spanning the period from Post-Impressionism and the Belle Epoque to Cubism. He was particularly accomplished in the use of color aquatint and drypoint. In Villon's Les Cartes, a prostitute who is wearing only undergarments, black stockings, and a yellow hat with green feather, is lying on a bed covered with a raspberry red bedspread in a room with pink and white floral wallpaper. She is playing solitaire. A little white dog keeps her company. With its dramatic composition, provocative subject matter, magnificent draftsmanship, and delicious color, Les Cartes is a stunning image. Source: News, October November December 2012.
