The most beautiful things in life aren’t just things
They’re people in places
Its the whispering of wind in the trees
Its paint bleeding into a canvas, slow and uncontained
They’re moments in time
Like the way your grandmother says your name when you pick up the phone, “Hey baby”
The embrace of a hug when words feel too heavy

The most beautiful things don’t ask to be seen
They arrive with the inhale and exhale of breath gone before you can name them
They’re the echo of two heartbeats in sync
They’re the paint strokes in a painting you can only see up close
They stare at you in the face just waiting for you to notice

These aren’t just things
They’re stretch marks in time
Moments poured gently like colors seeping down raw canvas
These aren’t things, they’re present moments
So stay present
You might miss life’s hums between loud things

DES MOINES SPEAKS

DSM Speaks are short audio reflections on artwork in our permanent collection, written and voiced by diverse members of our community. Contributors to this program were selected in partnership with CultureALL and the Des Moines Art Center. We hope by elevating these diverse ways of seeing we can encourage all visitors to connect more deeply and to see themselves and their identities within our walls.
