Kara Walker creates visually beguiling but horrific, over-the-top imagery of unimaginable violence to remind us of the sordid history of racism, sexual oppression, and vioence in America. SIlhouetted figures deployed across a long white sheet evoke shadow plays and the narratives of slavery. Her black silhouettes against white paper, derived from the 19th centure art of paper-cutting, symbolize black and white relations.
