Sean Scully rose to international prominence in the 1980s and is now regarded as one of the most significant abtract painters of his time. One of Scully's recent paintings, Wall of Light Red Night (2004), is part of the artist's "Wall of Light" series, begun in 1958 in response to Mexican architectural brickwork. This painting is representative of Scully's use of rectangles of color stacked horizontally and vertically, with the spaces between the blocks revealing underlying color.
