Graciele Iturbide, one of Mexico's foremost contemporary photographers, explores the haunting contradictions of traditional and contemporary Mexican culture. In this sepia-toned photogravure, Jano, a mysteriously iconic, androgynous, and childlike figure removes a mask to reveal another mask beneath. Jano is the Spanish translation of Janus, the Roman two-headed god of beginnings.
