This image is one of a portfolio of six black-and-white photographs documenting rock carvings by Ana Mendieta. The images were created in Iowa in 1981 and editioned by Galerie Lelong in 1994.

Mendieta lived near Iowa City from childhood until she finished college at the University of Iowa. She produced an astonishing body of work during her lifetime, which included performance, photography, sculpture, and body art. Her merger of earth art and body art has contributed to the feminist movement's focus on gender and the body.
