Chuck Close is a major American painter well-known for his straightforward, frontal portraits of friends and artists as well as self-portraits. Beginning in 2000, in addition to his painting, prints, and drawings, he began to experiment with daguerreotypes. Daguerreotypes are produced by coating a polished silver-surfaced copper plate with a solution of iodine and bromine to make it light sensitive. It is exposed in the camera and then developed by "fuming" with mercury vapor. This image is a portrait of Jim Demetrion, director of the Art Center from 1969 - 1984.
