Label Text David Shapiro's work is characterized as transcending the medium: intensely spiritual, intellectual, and visually refined. In the painting Mirror (4), he integrates opposites--the material with the spiritual, humanity's inner and outer worlds. With its elegant vertical format, the work explores male-female dualities through contrasting textures constructed by incessantly working the painted surface. Shapiro studied at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn and earned an M.F.A. from Indiana University in Bloomington. Source: News, January February 1999.
