Cy Twombly, born in Lexington, Virginia in 1928, is a contemporary of Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns. Like them, he was part of America's indigenous art moverment, Abstract experssionism. He contributes to its spontaneous gesture, its opening of pictorial space and its acceptance of the matter of paint as the essence of painting. Twombly's pictorial method is close to the "automatic writing" and the psychic improvisation of the surrealist artists, without evoking their figurative subject matter.
