Joseph Beuys was born in 1921 in Krefeld, Germany. He traveled extensively throughout his life, was wounded five times during the war, lectured, preformed and exhibited at a variety of venues and was part of the Fluxus multi-media art movement in the 1960s that was strong in both the United States and Germany. Professor of Monumental Sculpture at the Dusseldorf Academy from 1961-72, Beuys set out to prove that the old concept of art--that of painting and sculpture--was outgrown. In Untitled, Beuys has sketched a recognizable cane and some sort of animal or figure, perhaps tied up at the limbs. It recalls many of Beuys' performances, in which he was often a shepherd character accompanied by animals.
