Created in watercolor and collage, Crane Creek is an abstracted woods in winter. The scene is in three layers, with each layer defined by dark streaking horizontal, diagonal, and vertical lines; ground, grass, woods. Washed greys, golden grass or grain beneath, and dense and sparse trees—all these elements lend to the idea of winter. However, nothing sets the scene more than the white of the paper. The negative space, torn, notched and collaged around the watercolor, wraps the work in implied snow. The collage gives a new framework to see the landscape, and gives it defined shape and the possibility that it is more than it was before.
