This woodcut by Durer is the first large plate work by the master of the Northern Renaissance, where it joins a number of his smaller woodcuts and engravings. It is an unusually fine proof impression from the block, and is a fitting representation of Durer's unique pivotal position between Gothic and modern conceptions.
