Rosofsky was born and lives in Chicago, a city which held fast to an Expressionist-Surrealist tradition while large numbers of artists in other cities were turning to abstraction. The colorfully clad soldiers are obviously pawns in someone else's martial chess game. Some stand stiffly at attention with their swords upright; other carry their flags; still others are caught frozen in motion. All of the soldiers are faceless as they stand on their pedestals waiting to be moved into position.
