Born in France in 1944, Christian Boltanski's art exists within current trends in contemporary European environmental art. His use of a complex system of personal mythology and his interest in simple, found materials has its roots in the work of such artists as Joseph Beuys, Mario Merz and Jannis Kounnelis.
