Going into my grandmother’s kitchen to make pickles by preparing the ingredients. Adding the spices to the pickles. Filling those huge casseroles with fresh pickles to the brim, and making it sit under the sun on the hottest days, then waiting for it to be ready is what our summer vacations would be. No South Indian meal is complete without a spoonful of sweet, sour, spicy, and mouth-watering pickle. The stone casserole was more commonly used then to ferment and preserve food from spoiling soon before the refrigerators came in. It makes me wonder if the future generations will ever have this experience of using the casseroles when we have started using glassware more now.
