This is a trial proof. The dominant ring-like form is reminiscent of similar forms which appear frequently in Ernst's paintings of the 1920's. However, in the present etching, the ring barely manages to retain its form because of the innumerable skeins and spots of color and ink which underline and traverse the ring. The result appears to be Ernst's variation of Abstract Expressionism, which itself was inspired to a large extent by Surrealist thought and technique.
