The child of an American teacher and a Japanese poet, and eventually trained in both Western art making and Japanese philosophy and art, Noguchi struggled throughout his career to reconcile these two distinct and often opposing histories. His unique point of view, however, resulted in a successful and influential body of work as a sculptor, designer, architect, and craftsman.

Noguchi’s work combines organic and geometric elements. In Solitude, cubes connect thin, arm-like forms that seem only tenuously attached to the sculpture. The simple shapes hold together with an elegant balance.

An ode to SOLITUDE
A safe place to breathe
You hold space for me
Simplicity
An offering to spirit
A sigh of relief
Washing over me
Long stretches of time
Time to be
Time to think
Striped down and sleek
No expectations
Unassuming
No judgements

No needs
No trying to control the state of things|
No mask
No face
No eyes to stare
No mouth to offer unwarranted advice
No ears to hear the gossip in the air
You understand from a place of stillness
Structured yet soft
You are of the earth
You are grounded
You help me listen

You are playful and clumsy and lanky and gentle and sentimental
And all the things I like
The familiarity
An imaginary friend
from a childhood dream
When I was alone in my room

A lost treasure,
my moon baby.
A companion. A love. A forever friend
You hid in this corner
So I could find you again
Tucked away by this wall of glass
To help me remember
Waiting for me on this path
Inviting a pause
Hide and seek

A tear dripping down my cheek at the perfect moment
The first deep breath I have taken in weeks

DES MOINES SPEAKS

DSM Speaks are short audio reflections on artwork in our permanent collection, written and voiced by diverse members of our community. Contributors to this program were selected in partnership with CultureALL and the Des Moines Art Center. We hope by elevating these diverse ways of seeing we can encourage all visitors to connect more deeply and to see themselves and their identities within our walls.
