Miller was a native of Nebraska, but spent many years living and working in Des Moines and Ames, Iowa. The artist hoped that her expressionist style would help depict the essence of the natural world. “In my work,” Miller explained, “I attempt to capture my response to land’s formation, plant growth, atmospheric condition, the mood of the site and the sense of place.” In Wolf Creek Pass, the artist presents a nearly abstract representation of a mountain pass in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado, known for its steep grade. Her application of a dark palette adds a sense of drama to the picture, effectively depicting the mountain’s towering presence in the background but also the agitation of an oncoming storm.
