Born in 1912, Kawa joined the Drake University faculty in 1964. In 1970 she received the top award in the 22nd Iowa Artists Exhibition and one of her paintings was judged as best in the 13th Midwest Bienniel exhibition (1974) at the Joslyn Museum in Omaha.
