Very little is known of the artist's life, not even the dates of his birth nor of his death. According to records he was active as a painter and printmaker in Nancy during most of the first two decades of the 17th century. Since very few of the paintings attributed to Bellange can be attributed to him with certainty, his art is best known through his etchings and drawings. Bellange was one of the leading exponents of the Mannerist style with took hold throughout Europe after the High Renaissance from about 1520 to 1620.
