Fantin-Latour is best known for his realistic paintings of fruit and flowers; however, only one of his prints depicts flowers. The rest of his print oeuvre, consisting of approximately 200 works, primarily is concerned with illustrations for musical compositions by Wagner, Berlioz, Schumann and other composers. These were favorite themes in his paintings as well.
The artist's biographer writes that Bouquet of Roses "was drawn direct from a painted sketch" but the lithograph itself is quite full and complete with a rich range of tones which almost suggest color.
