Label Text Born in Newburgh, New York, in 1923, Kelly has become known for his paintings and sculptures of large unmodulated color areas in geometric or biomorphic shapes. The work itself--not what it represents in a visual or symbolic or emotional way--is equated with reality. Printed in 1974, the work in the collection is representative of one aspect of Kelly's graphic work; at the same time he was also producing a number of sensitive line drawings and lithographs of various plant forms.
