Born in Newburgh, New York, in 1923, Kelly has become known for his paintings and sculptures of large unmodulated color areas in geometric or biomorphic shapes. The work itself--not what it represents in a visual or symbolic or emotional way--is equated with reality. Printed in 1974, the work in the collection is representative of one aspect of Kelly's graphic work; at the same time he was also producing a number of sensitive line drawings and lithographs of various plant forms.
