Label TextOne of the few works in the collection from the Congo region. This dance mask is usually worn in plays which celebrate the completion of initiation rites of young novices into adult society. As such, they symbolize the death and re-birth of the initiates. The pointed chin, bulging forehead, slightly turned up nose and arched eyebrows which come together at the bridge of the nose are characteristic of this elegant style.
